Back on the Strip is nominated for “Outstanding Independent Motion Picture”

Article by Deadline.

ominations were revealed Thursday for the 55th NAACP Image Awards, with newly minted Oscar nominee Colman Domingo, Emmy winners Ayo Edebiri and Keke Palmer, and Victoria Monét and Usher among those scoring multiple nominations.

The awards, which honor the year’s best in Black excellence in the fields of motion pictures, television, music, books and podcasts and are voted on by the public, will be handed out March 16 in a primetime ceremony to air on BET and CBS.

Domingo scored noms for his lead role playing civil rights icon Bayard Rustin in Netflix’s Rustin and for playing Mister in Warner Bros’ The Color Purple. He also is up for the Image Awards’ marquee Entertainer of the Year in a category that includes Palmer, Color Purple castmates Halle Bailey and Fantasia Barrino, and Usher. Angela Bassett won that title last year.

Monét, who has seven Grammy Awards nominations this year, had the most Image Awards nominations overall this morning with six, followed by the upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show headliner Usher with five. Other notables: Palmer with four including for her Wondery podcast Baby, This is Keke Palmer, and The Bear Emmy winner Edebiri with two to lead the TV categories.

Coming on the heels of the Oscar nominations this week, Amazon MGM’s American Fiction scored an Outstanding Motion Picture nom today. It will compete against Rustin, Color Purple, Neon’s Origin and Netflix’s They Cloned Tyrone.

Netflix leads all companies repping 575 nominees across the 94 categories — organizers added eight new categories this year — followed by Amazon with 27 and RCA Records with 20.

Public voting runs through February 24. Winners in non-televised categories will roll out in the week ahead of the March 16 ceremony.
